About the event
About 200 years ago what is now UBC Campus was a forest full of massive ancient trees, packed with wildlife, and stewarded by local indigenous people. Today those ancient forests are gone, replaced by buildings and planted non-native trees. However in some areas of UBC, the children of these ancient trees still survive. In these second-growth forests, the trees struggle to carry on their parent’s legacy in the face of Anthropocene and climate change.
The second-growth forest at UBC Farm, the largest contiguous forested area of campus, is a perfect example of a dense forest trying to survive in a rapidly changing environment. Come join us for an afternoon in the shade of these trees and learn how to identify our native tree species, how forest ecosystems work, and discuss with us what we can do to better protect forests.
